Alice More: Arrest him! Sir Thomas More: For what? Alice More: He's dangerous! William Roper: He's a spy! Margaret Roper: Father that man is bad! Sir Thomas More: There's no law against that. William Roper: There is; God's law. Sir Thomas More: Then God can arrest him. Alice More: While you talk he is gone. Sir Thomas More: And go he should if he were the Devil himself until he broke the law! William Roper: So, now you'd give the Devil the benefit of law? Sir Thomas More: Yes! What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil? William Roper: Yes! I'd cut down every law in England to do that! Sir Thomas More: Oh? And when the last law was down and the Devil turned round on you, where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country is planted thick with laws from coast to coast; Man's laws, not Gods. And if you cut them down - and you're just the man to do it - do you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes. I'd give the Devil benefit of law for my own safety's sake. Less Quote - A Man For All Seasons (movie) Law

But I am absolutely convinced that we should not neglect a more cognitive support for our faith — one that is intellectually or rationally based.
Marriage isn't "I promise to love you until I stop loving you." It's "I promise to make a conscious decision to continue to love you even when it's hard because I'm aware no one is perfect, but you are worth it."
Sometimes angels are disguised as kids with special needs to teach us how to be better people.
The essence of all beautiful art, all great art, is gratitude.
Christ obviously had quite a lot to say on this subject. But, as you skim through the above verses, notice what words do not appear: "government," "State," "policy," "law," "tax." He is not merely telling us to submit passively to some third-party administrator who will see to it that all of the tunics are evenly distributed, and all of the banquets diversely attended, and that a certain mandated portion is given to the beggars and the borrowers and the needy. Christ never established or suggests or endorses any State-sponsored system by which these things will be achieved. He makes it much simpler for us. He puts the onus not on politicians or bureaucrats but on someone else entirely: you.
Honestly, you should really stay away from plastics, but that can be difficult in such a plastic heavy society. If you are going to use them, you need to remember which are less hazardous. To summarize, plastics in categories #2, #4 and #5 are generally considered safe. Be weary of putting them in the microwave, even if they are labeled “microwave-safe”. Plastics #1, #3, #6 and #7 should be used with varying to extreme caution, especially around food or drink. Of these, plastic #1 isn’t too terrible, but needs to be stored in cool environments and should not be reused.

I can't help but note that, so often, the Christians who advocate higher taxes and higher welfare spending are also the Christians who will not be affected by it. They want "the rich" to help the poor, and they imagine that their personal responsibility to give to the poor has been alleviated this way. It hasn't. Regardless of taxes, if you're keeping nearly 100% of your income for yourself while your neighbor goes without, you are disobeying Jesus Christ and rejecting your duty as a Christian. It doesn't matter what Bill Gates is doing. Don't worry about him. His money is none of your concern. You have your own money, don't you? You live comfortably, in relative luxury, while the homeless freeze to death on the streets. Stop blaming "the rich" for this problem and go out and do something about it, you hypocrites.
Happiness is a choice not a result; nothing will make you happy until you choose to be happy. No person will make you happy until you decide to be happy. Your happiness will not come to you. It can only come from you.
Let it be.
Female domestic cats can have kittens from spring to late autumn in temperate zones and throughout the year in equatorial regions, with litter sizes often ranging from two to five kittens.
Now, why does Jesus advocate personal charity rather than government charity? Why does he put the onus on us as individuals instead of the State? I think the reason is this: love. The goal is not to eradicate poverty, like poverty is some kind of disease. The goal is simply to love each other. This is why Christ especially commends the old woman at the temple who gave comparatively little. It was, for her, an act of great love. And that is what Christ wants from us. He wants us to love each other. There is no love in the Welfare System. There is no love in taxation. It is bureaucratic, impersonal, disinterested, dehumanizing. A man is not experiencing the fruits of love when he cashes a monthly check sent to him by some government office. Rather, he is being treated like a number, a statistic, a problem that must be solved. This does not appear to be what Jesus had in mind.
Another focused-attention exercise is mindful walking. Notice the sensations of walking — “your feet on the ground, the wind caressing your skin, sounds in the air,” says Jha. Walking can take place either indoors or outdoors. You might find this activity easier than mindful breathing; go with whatever exercise works best for you.

If our genome is a piano, and our genes are the keys, health is the song we play on the piano. The science on hormesis, the stresses that may keep us strong, provides hints about what kind of song we should play. Keep the body conditioned with regular exercise. Keep your cells’ stress-response pathways intermittently engaged with minimally processed, plant-based food.

Pretending to have affect or charisma makes you look like a sociopath (here is an example if you want to see it…Ramit is not the problem). Just be yourself. For some people, that happens to be the cool, smooth, artificial stage presence and that’s an advantage but also a curse. For most of us, it is not. Be who you are.

encouraged me to set up mental speed bumps so that I would be forced to think for a second before engaging with my phone. I put a rubber band around the device, for example, and changed my lock screen to one that showed three questions to ask myself every time I unlocked my phone: “What for? Why now? What else?”
Kevin, the "rubber bank around the phone" idea is probably the best life hack ever. Thanks for sharing! It helped me reduce my phone screentime by almost 70% in one day!

What is a Dad? A dad is someone who... wants to catch you before you fall but instead picks you up, brushes you off, and lets you try again. A dad is someone who... wants to keep you from making mistakes but instead lets you find your own way, even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt. A dad is someone who... holds you when you cry, scolds you when you break the rules, shines with pride when you succeed, and has faith in you even when you fail.
The first post went up at 9:42 a.m.
In it, the department said: “Road sharks are on the menu today!,” noting that a police officer in Reston stopped someone on Fairfax County Parkway.
The driver is accused of going 105 mph in a 50 mph zone.
The post said: “No possible excuse here. Slow down.”
Fairfax County, like many other police departments, make it a practice to share cases of excessive speeding or other reckless behavior on the roadways to call attention to the dangers that some drivers may create for themselves, their passengers, and for other people on the road.

The Prince William County Police Department (PWCPD) said that a school bus was involved in a crash in Bristow on Wednesday afternoon.
A tree had fallen on the bus, crushing its front. As of 4 p.m., fire and police crews had removed the tree from the bus.
No students were on the bus at the time of the crash but the driver was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Goals should be dependent on your language level and access to resources (such as organized classes or the ability to study abroad).
Take your time, don’t rush. Some problems are harder than others. Deal with the ones right in front of you first. Come back to the others later. You’ll get there. The process is about doing the right things, right now. Not worrying about what might happen later, or the results, or the whole picture.
Sometimes you have to let go of the picture of what you thought life would be like and learn to find joy in the story you're living
If enough of us and enough of our neighbors strive to make our decisions and guide our lives by the truth of God, the moral virtues needed in every society will abound.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal has said that it is key once you develop a strategic plan to bring in people who are not wedded to it, the outsiders who have no interest in it. They are, as the military term goes, a red team whose job is simple: to find holes and problems in your plan. Again, as a strategist, you can’t have your ego involved—you should be grateful when people expose flaws in your approach. It is why companies need to appoint a Chief Dissent Officer—someone who can ruthlessly kill bad ideas in the making.
There is a cliche: The best time to do it was yesterday, the next best is right now. Don’t put off dealing with your problems. They will only grow (many are contagious). The slave-turned-philosopher Publius Syrus had a maxim: “Rivers are easiest to cross at their source.” A great strategist doesn’t wait. They don’t put off until tomorrow what can be solved today.
Use Their Own Energy Against Them — A fundamental principle of martial arts is to use the opponent’s strength and energy against them. “The best way is ever not to attempt to stem a torrent but to divert it,” is how Alexander Hamilton explained in a letter to George Washington. Think of Gandhi—he didn’t meet the British Empire with military resistance, that would have been foolish. Instead, he used passive resistance, which turns shows of strength and force against itself in the court of public opinion.
Learn to Wait it Out — One of the most counterintuitive strategic lessons comes from Quintus Fabius Maximus Verrucosus, the Roman whose mission was to defeat Hannibal who not only had already crossed the Alps but had racked a number of important victories on Italian soil. Fabius’s genius came from understanding that not engaging with Hannibal is where success would come from. He knew that Hannibal didn’t have the army capable of attacking a walled city like Rome and that since he was far from home, Hannibal could only last for so long. There’s an argument that the South should have used a similar strategy in the US Civil War. But this requires discipline and patience. It’s exciting and easy to attack. It’s hard to wait it out.
Looking at standards of living around the world, an observer at the time would have noticed that on average people were better off in Italy than in Britain, India, and Japan. But the vast differences between the rich and the poor in any given country were much more striking than these differences across regions.
Permission priming can help solve this problem by: Directing the user's awareness: Users know that a photo editing app needs camera access. Evidence shows that a reminder, directing the user's awareness to this fact, prepares them for the ask better. Tying access to value: Users sign up to do something specific. Let them know that you're only asking for access to help them achieve their goals.
13 Characteristics of People Who Have True Integrity 1. They value other people's time. They value their own time so they also value the time of other people. They know you have plenty of other places you need to be and won't hold you up. If you spend time with them, it is likely they will thank you for that as well. 2. They give credit where it is due. They do not take credit for things they did not do. They will always credit those who deserve it. If you help this person with a project he or she will likely mention your name so you can take credit for your work. 3. They are authentic. They are their truest forms. You won't catch them in a lie or being fake. 4. They are always honest. They are honest people that feel no need to lie as it is important for them to get to where they need to get in life honestly. 5. They never take advantage of others. They are not the kind of people who will take advantage of someone else. They love to build people up and help them get where they need to be. Taking too much from someone else will never be an issue with someone who has a lot of integrity. 6. They do not argue over disagreements. They will talk through things in a civil manner or not talk at all. You cannot and will not force this person into arguing over something completely ridiculous. I find this to be a very respectable trait. 7. They give most people the benefit of the doubt. They try to see the good in everyone. I think this is because they feel like maybe there are more people in this world that also have integrity. That being said, if you take advantage of them too much they will get rid of you. 8. They know when something is bothering someone. They have a great intuition that lets them know when something is going on. If someone is down in the dumps they will notice. Chances are they will actually do what they can to cheer you up. 9. They believe others. They accept your word as truth until it is disproven. That being said, they do not take lying well. And once you lie to them, it is unlikely that they will ever take your word again. 10. They apologize first. If they have done something wrong they will come to you and apologize. This is just how they are. They own up to their mistake and try to make things right. 11. They are humble. They do not quite know their own worth. While they are very important and do so much good they don't quite see it. You should remind them of it. 12. They do good when they can. They are always helping other people. They love to know that they have improved someone's life. It gives their lives meaning. 13. They are always kind to those who need it. Giving kindness can go a long way. When someone looks like they need a little pick me up these people deliver. They can brighten up almost anyone's day. If you are someone who has true integrity, thank you for being who you are and thank you for all that you do. You really do actually make a difference in society, please keep up the good work. If you feel no one else is proud of you, know that I am.
But too often, we proceed like this . . . A flash of inspiration: I want to do the best and biggest ______ ever. Be the youngest ______. The only one to ______. The “firstest with the mostest.” The advice: Okay, well, here’s what you’ll need to do step by step to accomplish it. The reality: We hear what we want to hear. We do what we feel like doing, and despite being incredibly busy and working very hard, we accomplish very little. Or worse, find ourselves in a mess we never anticipated. Because we only seem to hear about the passion of successful people, we forget that failures shared the same trait.
Passion is about. (I am so passionate about ______.) Purpose is to and for. (I must do ______. I was put here to accomplish ______. I am willing to endure ______ for the sake of this.) Actually, purpose deemphasizes the I. Pur pose is about pursuing something outside yourself as opposed to pleasuring yourself.
Let’s say you’ve got to do something difficult. Don’t focus on that. Instead break it down into pieces. Simply do what you need to do right now. And do it well. And then move on to the next thing. Follow the process and not the prize.
There are two types of knowledge and most of us focus on the wrong one. The first type of knowledge focuses on knowing the name of something. The second focuses on knowing something. These are not the same thing. The famous Nobel winning physicist Richard Feynman understood the difference between knowing something and knowing the name of something and it’s one of the most important reasons for his success.
1. Hire outstanding people and hold on to them. 2. Encourage everyone in the organization to set challenging goals and meet them. 3. Allocate key resources (people, capital, operating expenses) so as to maximize productivity. 4. Reward people in ways that encourage superior performance rather than demotivate superior performers.
“I would be happy to learn just half the stuff I already thought I learned.”
I think that sometimes instead of teaching with the Spirit, people teach from their own experience. If this experience is narrow then only one voice is heard. Those who grow up with different experiences tend to feel judged and chastised instead of instructed on the principles being taught. While using personal experiences in a lesson helps to personalize the lesson, the lesson should be taught in a way that includes the vast diversity of the Church's members. Experiences are important in a discussion, but the importance of a lesson is to teach and instruct on how to grow as a member of the gospel. There are ways that we might be able to achieve this. I find that reaching out to those who I know come from different experiences before a lesson can give me different perspectives to ponder during preparation. Also, treating a lesson as more of a guide to facilitate a group discussion allows those in the room to teach each other. The lesson then acts as a way to keep on topic while the group bounces experiences and ideas off of each other. Most importantly, a lesson should be prepared with a prayerful heart. We should teach with the intent that Heavenly Father has a lesson to share and we are his mouthpiece. With a prayer in our hearts and Heavenly Father in mind, His message will be taught so that all will hear and feel understood. Whether you have been a member all your life or you are a convert, whether you are less active or perfect in your church activity, please speak up in church about your imperfections and your weaknesses, about your frailties, and about your truth. There are people that need to hear from you. There are people that need to find someone to relate to. If we only talk about our successes and our perfection then how can anyone live up to the perfect image in the room? This could make the difference between someone choosing to come to church and someone choosing not to. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland stated in a fireside that 'the Church is not a monastery for the isolation of perfect people. It is more like a hospital provided for those who wish to get well.' If we always talk about experiences in the gospel with rose-colored glasses on, do we really share the truth of our experience or do we share what we want others to hear?
“Adversity comes from different sources. You may at times face trials as a consequence of your own pride and disobedience. These trials can be avoided through righteous living. Other trials are simply a natural part of life and may come at times when you are living righteously. For example, you may experience trials in times of sickness or uncertainty or at the deaths of loved ones. Adversity may sometimes come because of others’ poor choices and hurtful words and actions. “… Your success and happiness, both now and in the eternities, depend largely on your responses to the difficulties of life”

I obviously know that what I've done with my life, to live, might be somewhat controversial to some people. And that's OK. You know what? We don't have to hang out together. My life is, in a lot of ways, a lot easier now because I don't have to deal with so much stuff I had to deal with before. And that is secrecy, hiding, sneaking around. All of that stuff. I don't do any of that anymore.
I’m reminded of the rule that if you see a supposed flaw in someone that they can change in 15 seconds (like something stuck in their teeth or their fly is down), tell them. If they can’t quickly change it (crooked teeth, overweight), don’t. Not a perfect analogy, but I was reminded of this by your comment.
You could write a C/C++/Java program, but it can take a lot of development time to get even a first-draft program

Surround yourself with positive thinkers who are not always creating drama. Choose people who make your day brighter simply by being around them. Find those whom you admire; you are proud to know; and who support, motivate and encourage you to grow.
Nathaniel Givens March 13, 2019 at 10:51 am Geoff – AUS I am not sure that knowing something that can’t be known isnt a dangerous self delusion that leads to over confidence in our judgement v scientific truth. There’s a solid case to be made (Hume has made it) that we can’t really know anything. So where does that leave us? It’s reasonable to embrace a set of propositions as true even if we know very well that we can’t actually be certain. If you take Hume seriously (I do), we have no other choice. Especially since beliefs are revealed in actions more than in words. Which is to say that even if you try (sincerely!) to reject any proposition that you can’t prove with certainty, your day-to-day life is going to give away the fact that–implicitly–you do, in fact, operate on a whole suite of assumptions that you can’t hope to prove. They key isn’t to restrict ourselves to only believing what we can prove. That is impossible. The key is to be aware of the fact that we’re operating on assumptions that we can’t (and haven’t) proven. (Not sure if this is agreeing with your or disagreeing, to be honest!)
Lisa Fluckiger March 14, 2019 at 10:19 am I heard Pete Enns say that if we replace the word “believe” with the word “trust” in the NT, we will be pretty close to what the writers intended. For me, the premise that belief comprehends a certain amount of doubt Is not useful, and I’m not sure it’s true. Maybe because it sends me down the rabbit hole of “What do I really know?” “How strong is my belief?” I liked reading this, but find it unsatisfying. It (the premise) misses the point about revelation. I have found that after the Spirit speaks to me, it is about 1) trust and 2) the ability to live with ambiguity – not understanding it all.
Some things that are true are not very useful.

I turn now to an excerpt from President Brigham Young’s secretary’s journal for a choice insight brought to my attention by Professor Ronald Esplin. When asked in conversation, “Why are men left alone and often sad? Why is not God always at man’s side promoting universal happiness at least for His Saints? Why does not God do everything for man?” President Young responded that man’s divine destiny requires individual experience and practice in learning “to act as an independent being”—to see what we will do, whether we will be “for God or not”—and in developing our own capacity and in using our own resources. Such experiences will teach us to be “righteous in the dark—to be a friend of God.” (Brigham Young Office Journal, 28 Jan. 1857.) This is a sobering and revealing insight about God’s plans for us here, and it underlines with urgency the need for the attribute of meekness, especially when one feels forsaken and forgotten and alone “amid th’ encircling gloom.” (John Henry Newman, “Lead, Kindly Light”; see Hymns, no. 112.)

On the other hand, Python also offers much more error checking than C, and, being a very-high-level language, it has high-level data types built in, such as flexible arrays and dictionaries
Python enables programs to be written compactly and readably. Programs written in Python are typically much shorter than equivalent C, C++, or Java programs, for several reasons: the high-level data types allow you to express complex operations in a single statement; statement grouping is done by indentation instead of beginning and ending brackets; no variable or argument declarations are necessary.

Jordan has a complex relationship to freedom of speech. He wants to effectively silence those left-wing professors by keeping students away from their courses because the students may one day become “anarchical social revolutionaries” who may bring upon us disruption and violence. At the same time he was advocating cutting funds to universities that did not protect free speech on their campuses. He defended the rights of “alt right” voices to speak at universities even though their presence has given rise to disruption and violence. For Jordan, it appears, not all speech is equal, and not all disruption and violence are equal, either.

Doctrine & Covenants 11:12-14 "And now, verily, verily, I say unto thee, put your trust in that Spirit which leadeth to do good-yea, to do justly, to walk humbly, to judge righteously; and this is my Spirit. Verily, verily, I say unto you, I will impart unto you of my Spirit, which shall enlighten your mind, which shall fill your soul with joy; and then shall ye know, or by this shall you know, all things whatsoever you desire of me, which are pertaining unto things of righteousness, in faith believing in me that you shall receive."

Repeated exposure to a fear object or situation can lead to familiarity and acclimation, which can reduce feelings of fear and anxiety.
Tryna tell these cats: it is time you start being responsible for your own existence instead of doing everything in your power to fail because it's easy. You wear your ignorance like a badge of honor and you call that being cool. Well, that's called masturbation. That's right: it may make you feel good but it does not produce life.

If a citation in parentheses follows the quotation, the period follows the citation. If a superscript footnote number is used, it follows the period and the quotation marks.
Matt 6:1-18 hits me a little harder when I consider the possibility that the hypocrites (likely Pharisees, considering Matt 5:20) were not selfish. Pharisee (meaning “to separate”) formed among common people, to fight unrighteousness from Hellenization and Paganism encroaching into Jewish society. They were not founded as wealthy or elite political leaders. They fought the apostasy of the Sadducees, who they felt ignored the words of the prophets and did not believe in the resurrection. Pharisees founded public charities, and encouraged prayer outside the temple by meeting weekly and establishing synagogues. They believed the Messiah would one day replace the corrupt leadership of their people, but believed in changing society through their teaching and example in preparation for that time. There were firm standards to become a Pharisee, paying tithing, and doing good works under observation for a period of time. Praying in the streets, publicly offering, and demonstrating fasting were all part of the Pharisees’ plan to lead the people to righteousness through example. They believed that they had a good cause, but in pursuing a good cause they changed these acts that should individually bind us to God into a public performance. Praise led to individual pride, but certainly group pride as well. Perpetuating the goals of the group became their top priority, and their identity as holy people was tied to this group. If I consider that “being an example”, “perfecting the Saints,” or “improving the image of the Church” might motivate my behaviors more than having a heart for God, these scriptures make me realize how far I have to go.
You know, the very powerful and the very stupid have one thing in common. They don't alter their views to fit the facts. They alter the facts to fit the views.
In the course of my research on insight, my team and I compiled a group of 50 self-awareness unicorns: people we found who were rated high in self-awareness (both by themselves and by others) but who had started out with only low to moderate self-awareness. When we looked at their speech patterns, our unicorns reported asking what often and why rarely. In fact, when we analyzed the transcripts of our interviews, the word why appeared less than 150 times, but the word what appeared more than 1,000 times. One unicorn, a 42-year-old mother who had walked away from a career as a lawyer when she finally realized that there was no joy for her in that path, explained it this way: “If you ask why, [I think] you’re putting yourself into a victim mentality …. When I feel anything other than peace, I say ‘What’s going on?’; ‘What am I feeling?’; ‘What is the dialogue inside my head?’; ‘What’s another way to see this situation?’ or ‘What can I do to respond better?’” “Why” questions trap us in our past; “what” questions help us create a better future. So when it comes to developing internal self-awareness, I like to use a simple tool that I call What Not Why. Why questions can draw us to our limitations; what questions help us see our potential. Why questions stir up negative emotions; what questions keep us curious. Why questions trap us in our past; what questions help us create a better future. In addition to helping us gain insight, asking what instead of why can be used to help us better understand and manage our emotions. Let’s say you’re in a terrible mood after work one day. Asking “Why do I feel this way?” might elicit such unhelpful answers as “Because I hate Mondays!” or “Because I’m just a negative person!” Instead, if you ask “What am I feeling right now?” you could realize you’re feeling overwhelmed at work, exhausted and hungry. Armed with that knowledge, you might decide to fix yourself dinner, call a friend or commit to an early bedtime.

Life is a quality that distinguishes matter that has biological processes, such as signaling and self-sustaining processes, from matter that does not, and is defined descriptively by the capacity for homeostasis, organisation, metabolism, growth, adaptation, response to stimuli, and reproduction. Many philosophical definitions of living systems have been proposed, such as self-organizing systems. Viruses in particular make definition difficult as they replicate only in host cells. Life exists all over the earth in air, water, and soil, with many ecosystems forming the biosphere. Some of these are harsh environments occupied only by extremophiles.
In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear confrontations, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and be alert for bears while in the field. …We advise that outdoorsmen wear small bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren’t expecting them, and to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter…. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear droppings. Black bear droppings are smaller and contain lots of berries and fur. Grizzly bear droppings have little bells in it and smell like pepper.
I hear a lot of hurting people who’ve left church say, “Instead of church, I go for a walk and talk to Jesus,” or, “I go to a coffee shop with my Bible on Sunday morning and feel way better than I do at church.” I get that. It will always feel better to distance ourselves from painful relationships. But the Bible frequently, and with great clarity, calls us to mend things, to reconcile, to avoid the temptation to run away. In some cases, it questions our faith if we refuse. Before we leave, we’re compelled to ask God, not ourselves, if we’re hurt. If we try to do some DIY soul searching, or query our feelings, we’ll typically come up with the wrong answer. God is the only one qualified to plumb the depths of our spiritual garbage, filter out the things we can handle, and put them in our face. If you pray the “God, am I hurt?” prayer, and the answer is “yep,” things can get scary. What’s required of us in the reconciliation process is super hard. Again, the forgiveness and courage that are called for in these arenas take a mountain of character. Unfortunately, impossible moments are the only places where character can be purchased. In all of the above prayers, it’s important that we open ourselves to answers we might not want to hear, which means that we’ll have to take steps we don’t want to take. In any big decision, all options need to be laid clearly on the table, and we need to be open to all of them.
If you buy into the idea that a lot of this investing is pretty divorced from reality, then the question is how long this lasts. For now, the music’s still playing, so people are dancing.

Don’t wait until your body tells you to take a break. If you wait until you feel tired to take a break, it’s too late—you’ve already missed the window of peak productivity. Keeping to your schedule ensures that you work when you’re the most productive and that you rest during times that would otherwise be unproductive. Remember, it’s far more productive to rest for short periods than it is to keep on working when you’re tired and distracted.

Severe myocarditis weakens the heart so that the rest of the body doesn't get enough blood. Clots can form in the heart, leading to a stroke or heart attack.
Heart failure. Untreated, myocarditis can damage your heart's muscle so that it can't pump blood effectively. In severe cases, myocarditis-related heart failure may require a ventricular assist device or a heart transplant. Heart attack or stroke. If your heart's muscle is injured and can't pump blood, the blood that collects in your heart can form clots. If a clot blocks one of your heart's arteries, you can have a heart attack. If a blood clot in your heart travels to an artery leading to your brain, you can have a stroke. Rapid or irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias). Damage to your heart muscle can cause an arrhythmia. Sudden cardiac death. Certain serious arrhythmias can cause your heart to stop beating (sudden cardiac arrest). It's deadly if not treated immediately.

Potential causes of myocarditis include: Viruses. Many viruses are commonly associated with myocarditis, including the viruses that cause the common cold (adenovirus); COVID-19; hepatitis B and C; parvovirus, which causes a mild rash, usually in children (fifth disease); and herpes simplex virus. Gastrointestinal infections (echoviruses), mononucleosis (Epstein-Barr virus) and German measles (rubella) also can cause myocarditis. It's also common in people with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Bacteria. Bacteria that can cause myocarditis include staphylococcus, streptococcus, the bacterium that causes diphtheria and the tick-borne bacterium responsible for Lyme disease. Parasites. Among these are such parasites as Trypanosoma cruzi and toxoplasma, including some that are transmitted by insects and can cause a condition called Chagas disease. Chagas disease is much more common in Central and South America than in the United States, but it can occur in travelers and in immigrants from that part of the world. Fungi. Yeast infections, such as candida; molds, such as aspergillus; and other fungi, such as histoplasma, often found in bird droppings, can sometimes cause myocarditis, particularly in people with weakened immune systems.

The highest reporting rates were among males aged 12−17 years and those aged 18−24 years (62.8 and 50.5 reported myocarditis cases per million second doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine administered, respectively). Myocarditis rates from Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD), based on electronic health records, were also evaluated. Although numbers were too small to show rates in all subgroups by age, VSD data indicated increased risk of myocarditis in the 7 days after receipt of dose 1 or dose 2 of an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine compared with the risk 22–42 days after the second dose, particularly among younger males after dose 2
The ACIP discussion concluded that 1) the benefits of vaccinating all recommended age groups with mRNA COVID-19 vaccine clearly outweigh the risks of vaccination, including the risk of myocarditis after vaccination
Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). The inflammation can reduce the heart's ability to pump and cause rapid or irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

Surprise can have important effects on human behavior. For example, research has shown that people tend to disproportionately notice surprising events.
1) MORE Water; LESS SODA 2) MORE Green Tea; LESS Alcohol 3) MORE Fruit; LESS Sugar 4) MORE Vegetables; LESS Meat 5) MORE Walking; LESS Driving 6) MORE Sleep; LESS Worry 7) MORE Laughter; LESS Anger 8) MORE Action; LESS Talk 9) MORE Organic; LESS Processed 10) MORE Positivity; LESS Negativity
This is why surprising and unusual events in the news tend to stand out in memory more than others. Research has also found that people tend to be more swayed by surprising arguments and learn more from surprising information.
The Fed’s job is supposed to be to take away the punchbowl just as the party gets going; it has instead presided over a blowout.
Hitting the monetary brakes, though necessary, endangers growth. History suggests that the Fed finds it difficult to cool the jobs market without eventually tipping the economy into recession. It has pulled off a “soft landing” only three times since 1945. And it has never done so while battling high inflation.

In some usages, the definition of a tree may be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as lumber or plants above a specified height. In wider definitions, the taller palms, tree ferns, bananas, and bamboos are also trees

Every time I hear Mason and others describe their beliefs, I think, wow, if those appointed to lead the church could do so without the fear, blame, and gaslighting (and whitewashing and correlating) that they do, and have the faith in Christ exemplified by the Givens, etc, what a wonderful place it would be! But the main principles of the gospel are sorely lacking. Faith in Jesus Christ should guide our choices, not fear that telling the truth will scare members or lessen our image. Not fear that LGBTQ persons having societal rights and freedoms will halt the work (it can’t) nor fear of diverse views and practices. Repentance is key- not “we don’t make apologies” not ignoring or glossing over serious issues. Or blaming members for not understanding that the things they were explicitly taught weren’t accurate. Unrighteous Dominion, using priesthood authority to manipulate and whip into line, blaming those that are hurts rather than repent and change, rather than gentle love and persuasion, comes down from the top. We need to have faith that if we do the best we can, it will work out, not consolidate power as absolute and squeeze until there’s no room left for the flock. Black and white authoritarian bulldozing comes straight from the top, and sooner or later those that struggle along the gentle nuanced path will be swept off. (And not everyone that leaves stops believing, some can no longer support abusive language and practices against our fellow saints. Especially the vulnerable on the margins.)
Open monitoring helps you learn to pay attention to what’s happening around you without becoming attached to it. This practice is not about paying attention to a particular object or objects. Instead, it’s about remaining open to any experience — internal or external — that arises, and allowing it to wash over you. “You don’t process it, you don’t think about it,” Jha says. “You just notice its occurrence and allow it to dissipate.” To do this, sit in a comfortable, upright position and try to be aware of any sensations, thoughts or emotions that emerge, without holding on to them. It might help you to label what comes up by using words like “planning,” “worrying,” “judging,” “remembering.” You can do this silently or out loud. After you name it, let it go. Think of what you’re doing as like watching clouds move in the sky and observing the different shapes they make — but in this practice, you’re watching your thoughts travel through your mind. And yes, there will be times when you feel like you keep getting hooked on a particular thought or sensation and can’t seem to drop it. Says Jha, “If you find you’re so lost in thought that you can’t do the open monitoring practice, go back to doing a focused attention exercise to steady yourself again.”
When you crack open a book by Curtis Sittenfeld, you can be fairly sure what you're getting—a fact the author herself is the first to admit. "I have certain preoccupations, as every writer does," she says. "I think that stories reflect, for better or worse a particular mind—that’s my mind—and if you wanna read about a different topic, go to someone else’s book." Her chosen topics are in full display her new collection of short stories, You Think It, I'll Say It, out this week from Penguin Random House. But Sittenfeld embraces those aforementioned preoccupations—class and gender and the contrast between the public and private selves—in a way that will still surprise those readers familiar with her canon: with sharp insight, and through the lens of America in 2018.
Be intentional, not habitual, with your self-criticism. There’s nothing wrong with self-criticism, pointing out your own mistakes, and holding yourself to a high standard. But you’ll be much more likely to do this productively (and accurately) if it’s intentional and deliberate rather than a gut reaction. Instead of instantly passing judgment on yourself in the moment, schedule a time to reflect on a perceived mistake or flaw intentionally, maybe by journalling about it or talking it over with someone you trust.
Clark March 14, 2019 at 10:43 am Lisa, from what I understand the Hebrew notion of truth and faith are wrapped up in ideas of trust and reliability. I wrote on that relative to how the Church is true in our rhetoric a while back. So for instance Alma 32 should be best seen as how we see prophetic words as reliable. John W, while there are huge differences between science and religion, I’m not sure for Mormons that is as true. I’ve discussed that before and don’t want to derail this thread into a discussion of epistemology. I’d just say that one somewhat unique feature of Latter-day Saint thought is the emphasis on evidence. Often private evidence which is the big difference from science, but it’s still an evidentiary approach rather than what we find in most other faiths. What missionaries do is tell people they can find out and encourage them towards personal revelation.

Here’s what it comes down to for me. My gender is not something I perform; it is something I am. Womanhood is not something I do; it is something I live. Femininity does not define me; as a woman created in the image of God, I define it, in community with my sisters. When we reduce manhood and womanhood to a list of characteristics, behaviors, and roles assigned to each gender, we are not defending masculinity and femininity; instead, we are diminishing and impoverishing them.
Biblical passages about wives submitting to their husbands are not, as many Christians assume, rooted in a culture epitomized by June Cleaver’s kitchen, but in a culture epitomized by the Greco-Roman household codes, which gave men unilateral authority over their wives, slaves, and adult children. As Sharyn Dowd has observed, the apostles “advocated this system not because God had revealed it as the divine will for Christian homes, but because it was the only stable and respectable system anyone knew about. It was the best the culture had to offer.” (Carol A. Newsom and Sharon H. Ringe, Women's Bible Commentary: Expanded Edition - Louisville, KY: Westminster John Knox Press - 1998, p. 463) And with Roman officials looking for every excuse to imprison Christians, to challenge the codes would bring even more unwanted scrutiny to the early Church.
When we force people into gender-based boxes, insist that individuals conform to our concept of what men and women are supposed to be, we lose the wonder, the mystery, and the full-orbed expression of God’s image uniquely revealed in each human being. God created us male and female, yes, but He didn’t just create us male and female; he created us Jenny and Aaron, and Jason and Sarah, and John and Noel. All of us reflect God’s image in different ways. And it is very good.

In Aristotle’s Politics is found an astonishing theory about political power and its relationship to wealth. Aristotle is well known for seeing the city in terms of households and linking the rule of households – economy – to the rule of the city. This art of household management contrasts sharply with chrematistics – the making of money for its own sake, rather than for the purpose of thriving from the abundance the circulation of money can produce. This was a critically important insight for Karl Marx. It has continued relevance in our own time as capital expands its holding in an economy that generally fails to ground its true measure in the provisioning and prosperity of families and households. Economics, for Aristotle, should be a subset of politics. The type of regime prevailing in a state constitutes and is constituted by the distribution of resources in that state. Aristotle would expect to find monarchy where the control over the majority of resources rests in the hands of a single person. Likewise, aristocracy prevails where the wealth is shared by a few and democracy – Aristotle’s preference among the three types – exists where wealth is widespread among many people.
Virtue is “a middle course” and it “necessarily follows that the middle course of life is best – such a middle course as it is possible for each class of men to attain.” Where wealth is widely disbursed in a community we should expect to find virtue widely disbursed among the people. After all, the middle class is the most moderate class and “the least inclined to shun office and to covet office, and both those tendencies are injurious to states.”
Polybius, in his discussion of the Roman constitution, builds into Aristotle’s theory his own theory of constitutional change known as Anacyclosis. With Aristotle, Polybius agrees that regimes decay and fall apart either from without by invasion or external disaster or, more likely, they crumble from within through corruption and civil strife. For Polybius, the cycle between regimes from kingship to aristocracy to monarchy follows shifts in the spread of property ownership. Regimes age and die and their life cycle parallels economic and class cycles. The best security against the cycle of regime change, a cycle that begins and ends in chaotic non-polity, is a mixed constitution. Only a mixed constitution harnesses the one, the few, and the many in an equal and harmonious yoke. This is most likely achieved through democracy, but it should be kept in mind that no actual regime is all one thing or all another, but rather they tend toward unique conglomerations.
The definition of feminism does not tell you how to vote or what to think. You can vote Republican or Libertarian or Socialist or “I like that guy’s hair.” You can bag voting entirely. You can believe whatever you like about child-care subsidies, drafting women, fiscal accountability, Anita Hill, environmental law, property taxes, Ann Coulter, interventionist politics, soft money, gay marriage, tort reform, decriminalization of marijuana, gun control, affirmative action, and why that pothole at the end of the street still isn’t fixed. You can exist wherever on the choice continuum you feel comfortable. You can feel ambivalent about Hillary Clinton. You can like the ERA in theory, but dread getting drafted in practice. The definition does not stipulate any of that. The definition does not stipulate anything at all, except itself. If you believe in, support, look fondly on, hope for, and/or work towards equality of the sexes, you are a feminist. Yes, you are.

When you are exasperated by interruptions, try to remember that their very frequency may indicate the value of your life. Only people who are full of help and strength are burdened by other persons' needs. The interruptions which we chafe at are the credentials of our indispensability. The greatest condemnation that anybody could incur - and it is a danger to guard against - is to be so independent, so unhelpful, that nobody ever interrupts us, and we are left comfortably alone.
A lot of young people hate hearing this because they grew up with parents who worshipped their feelings as children, and protected those feelings, and tried to buy as many candy corns and swimming lessons as necessary to make sure those feelings were nice and fuzzy and protected at all times. Sadly, these parents probably did this because they were also beholden to their own feelings, because they were unable to tolerate the pain of watching a child struggle, even if just for a moment. They didn’t realize that children need some controlled measure of adversity to develop cognitively and emotionally, that experiencing failure is actually what sets us up for success, and that demanding to feel good all the time is pretty much a first-class ticket to having no friends once you hit adulthood.
“I hated discussing ideas with investors,” he said, “because I then become a Defender of the Idea, and that influences your thought process.” Once you became an idea’s defender, you had a harder time changing your mind about it. Mr. Burry is referring to commitment bias which causes individuals to become more convinced of their position once it has been publicly explained or debated with others. Along with confirmation bias, commitment bias is possibly one of the most dangerous pitfalls that investors can encounter.

This doesn’t mean you should ignore your feelings. Feelings are important. But they’re important not for the reasons we think they are. We think they’re important because they say something about us, about the world, and about our relationship with it. But they say none of these things. There’s no meaning attached to feelings. Sometimes you hurt for a good reason. Sometimes for a bad reason. And sometimes no reason at all. The hurt itself is neutral. The reason is separate. The point is that you get to decide. And many of us have either forgotten or never realized that fact. But we decide what our pain means. Just as we decide what our successes expose. And more often than not, any answer except one will tear you apart inside. And that answer is: nothing.
There are many subjects about which the scriptures are not clear and about which the Church has made no official pronouncements. In such matters, one can find differences of opinion among Church members and leaders. Are educators empathic to their students, and do they value children’s feelings?

“When we plant a rose seed in the earth, we notice that it is small, but we do not criticize it as “rootless and stemless.” We treat it as a seed, giving it the water and nourishment required of a seed. When it first shoots up out of the earth, we don't condemn it as immature and underdeveloped; nor do we criticize the buds for not being open when they appear. We stand in wonder at the process taking place and give the plant the care it needs at each stage of its development. The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies. Within it, at all times, it contains its whole potential. It seems to be constantly in the process of change; yet at each state, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is.” —Timothy Gallwey
If someone comes into your life and has a positive impact on you, be thankful that your paths crossed. And even if they can’t stay for some reason, be thankful that somehow they brought joy into your life, even if it was just for a short while. Life is change. People come and go, some stay, some don’t and that’s okay. Remember the good times and smile that it happened.
Barack Obama retired from office at 55. Ronald Reagan took his oath at 69. Syndey is three hours ahead of Perth, but that doesn’t make Perth slow. Someone graduated at the age of 22, but waited 5 years before securing a good job. Someone became a CEO at 25 and died at 50, while another became a CEO at 50 and lived to be 90. Someone is still single, while someone else got married. Everyone in this world works based on their own time zone. People around you might seem ahead of you, while some may seem behind you. Has anybody else read the treatment of WoW in Mormon Enigma? It has a surprising little nugget about coffee and tea. From p. 47: Thus Emma, faced almost daily with 'having to clean so filthy a floor' as was left by the men chewing tobacco, spoke to Joseph about the matter. David Whitmer's account supports Brigham Young's description. Some of the men were excessive chewers of the filthy weed, and their disgusting slobbering and spitting cursed Mrs. Smith - to make the ironical remark that `It would be a good thing if a revelation could be had declaring the use of tobacco a sin, and commanding its suppression.' Emma had support among the women - Whitmer further reports, 'The matter was taken up and joked about one of the brethren suggested that the revelation should also provide for a total abstinence from tea and coffee drinking, intending this as a counter dig at the sisters.' Joseph made the issue the subject of prayer, and the 'Word of Wisdom' was a result. Endnote 23 for Ch. 3 says the David Whitmer quotations are from the Des Moines Daily News, 16 Oct. 1886, p. 20. I don't know enough about Whitmer's memory, but if his account is true, then I can't help wonder whether the prohibition on coffee and tea was just tit for tat, or even-steven so Joseph could sell WoW's ban on strong drinks and tobacco to the men. And WoW's suggestion-level status also makes me wonder whether he (Joseph) really meant it. What with his continued alcohol consumption and sales. The revelation must have placated Emma somewhat while reserving party-boy wiggle room. Here we are 186 years later festooned with guilt or potential guilt over whether coffee makes it into our ice cream, or over drinking a glass of iced tea on a hot summer day. I wonder whether the Lord cares at all about moderate consumption of coffee or tea. (See Matt. 15:11.) Science hasn't really bolstered this component of WoW. Obedience in ignorance can be a legitimate test, but incoherence is a real mind-bender. Dug's steak-eating 300-pounder can drink buckets of caffeinated soda on the way to the Temple while a thimble full of ice tea will block my ticket in. Maybe there's truly a divine reason? I've obeyed the coffee/tea thing all my life. But I do question whether God or Joseph ever intended it to become the thing it's become. It just feels pharisaical. And I wonder whether God or the Prophet, or littler prophets ever banned or demanded common consent to ban 'coffee based products.' Why don't we use AOF 9 more often? It doesn't get out much.
The ideal work-to-break ratio was 52 minutes of work, followed by 17 minutes of rest. People who maintained this schedule had a unique level of focus in their work. For roughly an hour at a time, they were 100% dedicated to the task they needed to accomplish. They didn’t check Facebook “real quick” or get distracted by e-mails. When they felt fatigue (again, after about an hour), they took short breaks, during which they completely separated themselves from their work. This helped them to dive back in refreshed for another productive hour of work. Your brain wants an hour on, 15 minutes off People who have discovered this magic productivity ratio crush their competition because they tap into a fundamental need of the human mind: the brain naturally functions in spurts of high energy (roughly an hour) followed by spurts of low energy (15–20 minutes).
You may be asking, “How do I do this?” There is no “how.” It’s all in your head. There is literally nothing to do here other than mentally try on new perspectives and ask yourself, “What if [thing that is opposite of my assumption] were true about me? What would that mean?” And then psychically traverse the answer. This will be scary, at first. Your brain will resist it. But, of course, that’s where the practice of the skill comes in. Try this: Write down 20 things in your life today that you could potentially be wrong about. And again, I don’t just mean material stuff. I’m sure my understanding of physics is sorely lacking in many ways. But that’s not the most important thing I need to change my mind about. What we’re going for here is questioning some of those deep assumptions about your identity — I am not an attractive person; I am lazy; I don’t know how to talk to people; I won’t ever be happy because I feel stuck in my life; I think the world is going to end next Tuesday. The more emotionally charged the assumption, the more important it is to write it down and challenge it. Then, after you’ve gotten 20, go through and write down what it would mean in your life if it were wrong. This will feel scary at first. A lot of your assumptions you won’t want to question. But think of it this way: how confident can you be in your own beliefs if you’ve never challenged them, if you’ve never seen the other side? What we want to develop is that ability to see that “other side.” And those few occasions when it does appear more likely and more valid, hop on over.

A few months ago, I realized I couldn't read a book, watch a movie, or sustain a conversation without being distracted by my phone. I was using my phone an average of 6 hours a day, and picking it up more than 100 times. So I started a 30-day phone detox program. For an entire month, I tried to break my unhealthy phone habits. It involved getting a "phone coach," keeping a rubber band around my phone, locking it in a safe at night, KonMari-ing my apps, taking up pottery, and spending a weekend in the woods with no technology whatsoever. It changed my life. Here's the The New York Times column I wrote about the experience.

– some are singular or plural Most of the building was destroyed in the fire. Most of the building were destroyed in the fire. Most of the students are coming to the meeting. Most of the students is coming to the meeting. Some indefinite pronouns can take either the singular or the plural verb. It depends on the information in the rest of the sentence. This is where a prepositional phrase (of the building; of the students) actually does help to determine whether the verb should be singular or plural. In the above examples, #1 is correct: building is singular; and #3 is correct: students is plural. Other pronouns like most are all, any, enough, more, none, some, and who.
The rule for either … or and neither … nor Either the surgeon or the butcher is hunting for deer. Either the geese or the ducks are for sale. Neither the dentists nor the optician is pleased about the news. Neither the donkey nor the horses are eating the hay. In #1, the noun on either side of or is singular, so a singular verb is required. In #2, the noun on either side of or is plural, so a plural verb is used. In #3, the noun before nor is plural while the noun after nor is singular. In this case, the noun closer to the verb determines the number of the verb, so a singular verb is being used here. In #4, the noun before nor is singular while the noun after nor is plural. Since the noun closer to the verb determines the number of the verb, a plural verb is being used in this instance. Each of these examples is correct. The rule for either … or and neither … nor really amounts to this: The noun immediately preceding the verb determines the number of the verb.

The student, as well as the teacher, play the violin. The student, as well as the teacher, plays the violin. Parenthetical expressions are set off by commas and should be ignored for the purpose of determining subject-verb agreement. Some of these expressions are introduced with words such as together with, as well as, along with, other than, no less than, in addition to, including, accompanied by, not to mention. In the above examples, #2 and #4 are correct.

So if asking why isn’t so helpful, what should we ask? A study by psychologists J. Gregory Hixon and William Swann arrived at a simple answer. The researchers told a group of undergraduates that two raters would evaluate their personality based on a test of “sociability, likeability and interestingness” they’d taken earlier in the semester, then they asked the students to judge the accuracy of their results. What the students didn’t know was that everyone’s results were the same: one rater gave a positive evaluation, while the other gave a negative one. But before making their accuracy judgments, some of the participants were given time to think about why they were the kind of person they were, and others were asked to think about what kind of person they were. The why students, it turned out, were resistant to the negative evaluation. As the paper’s authors muse: “Presumably, participants who focused on why used their reflection time to rationalize, justify and explain away the negative information.” The what students, on the other hand, were more receptive to the same data and to the notion that it could help them understand themselves. The lesson here: Asking what could keep us open to discovering new information about ourselves, even if that information is negative or in conflict with our existing beliefs. Asking why might have the opposite effect.

we collect information in such detail and share it so widely that the company is virtually transparent. This works against the political infighting and bureaucratic obfuscation that cripple so many organizations. People at Cypress disagree vigorously on many things; in our management meetings, people of any rank are free (and eager) to challenge senior executives. But we disagree over substance and the best ways to make the hardheaded trade-offs that are the essence of management. Nobody gets ahead by using information selectively to win internal battles.
During a momentous battle, a Japanese general decided to attack even though his army was greatly outnumbered. He was confident they would win, but his men were filled with doubt. On the way to the battle they stopped at a religious shrine. After praying with the men, the general took out a coin and said, “I shall now toss this coin. If it is heads, we shall win. If tails, we shall lose. Destiny will now reveal itself.” He threw the coin into the air and all watched intently as it landed. It was heads. The soldiers were so overjoyed and filled with confidence that they vigorously attacked the enemy and were victorious. After the battle, a lieutenant remarked to the general, “No one can change destiny.” “Quite right,” the general replied as he showed the lieutenant the coin, which had heads on both sides.
Trajectory Hermeneutics: www.thefountain.org/Whritenor/trajectory_hermeneutics.htm Trajectory hermeneutics involves "a method of interpreting the Bible (hermeneutics) in which our final authority is not found in what is written in the Bible itself, but is (supposedly) to be found later, at the end of a 'trajectory' or path along which the New Testament was progressing when it was being written." 4 According to the proponents of this approach, we can trace a woman's place in the home and church from the patriarchial society of the Old Testament, through the ...

Clark, we-don't-knowism is person A feigning uncertainty in a commonly accepted claim to appear open-minded and in order to cast a different, yet less extraordinary, claim as rooted in certainty and the person making that claim (person B) as closed-minded, when the guiding force behind the appeal to 'we-don't-know' is unvoiced certainty behind a more extraordinary claim. 9/11 truthers commonly express certainty among themselves that the official explanation defies the laws of physics and that it had to have been a false flag attack perpetrated by the US government. However, when talking to others many mask their certainty of the false flag narrative behind appeals of we-don't-know to appear more open-minded. It could be that some people have sincere misgivings about the official explanation and are seeking more answers before speaking conclusively about 19 Arab hijackers being behind the attacks. But for many truthers, they spend little time questioning claims that the government was behind 9/11 and are overly eager to accept those ideas while excessively questioning and doubting of the official story. This is not open-minded thinking. It is conclusive thinking. Similarly I hear many LDS people express 'we-don't-know' about the age of dinosaurs and entertain ideas that dinosaurs came from other planets and criticize those who claim common knowledge of dinosaurs being millions of years old as closed-minded, when the likely motivating factors behind the idea that dinosaurs came from other planets is an unbending certainty that the earth's age is what is described in the Bible and that death didn't takeplace before Adam. This is not open-mindedness and it is wrong to criticize the claim that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago (common knowledge) as closed-minded and people who refuse to entertain the far more extraordinary idea that dinosaurs bones came from other planets that God took from when creating the earth as closed-minded. Before someone bandies about the idea of dinosaurs coming from other planets (or co-existing with humans, as many Pentecostals and Biblical inerrantists claim) they should present strong evidence of such.
There is a story they tell of two dogs. Both at separate times walk into the same room. One comes out wagging his tail while the other comes out growling. A woman watching this goes into the room to see what could possibly make one dog so happy and the other so mad. To her surprise, she finds a room filled with mirrors. The happy dog found a thousand happy dogs looking back at him while the angry dog saw only angry dogs growling back at him. What you see in the world around you is a reflection of who you are.

9. Make Haste Slowly — According to one historian, Augustus “thought nothing less becoming in a well-trained leader than haste and rashness,” which explains why festina lente (or make haste slowly) was one of his favorite sayings. As Arthur Schlesinger Jr. commented on Franklin Delano Roosevelt, “his caution was always within an assumption of constant advance.” When we are young, deliberation and caution often gets sacrificed at the expense of rushing unthinkingly into things. If you tend to sway that way, remember the lesson: festina lente.

On the other hand, if the unifying good of marriage is mutual personal fulfillment, why would we need or want the government involved? People engage in long-term personal relationships all the time without government even knowing about it. The primary public interest for civil marriage, from the revisionist view, is to arrange survivorship, hospital visitation, or end-of-life decision rights, among other things. However, there is no reason to restrict many of these benefits rights to sexual lovers — for example, why couldn’t best friends, siblings, or roommates enter into similar arrangements? Thus, the public interests are not unique to marriage, and the idea of civil marriage (as a unique institution) is therefore drawn into question.
Further, formalizing same-sex marriage signals to the public that fathers and mothers are interchangeable (that is, that two fathers and two mothers are equivalent to having both a father and a mother). Whether intended or not, this ultimately signals that both fathers and mothers are also expendable. If public policy treats both fatherhood and motherhood as expendable goods in the lives of children, this will weaken the public expectation that both fathers and mothers stick with the family and remain present in the lives of their children. The idea that fathers are fundamentally needed by their children (and their mother) promotes marital fidelity and permanence.

BUNNIES ARE FOR LIFE I used to be a lonely rabbit, Just looking for a home. I simply had no place to go, No one to call my own. I wandered through the streets and fields, in rain in heat and snow. I ate whatever I could find, I was always on the go. My skin would itch, my feet were sore, My body ached with pain. And no one stopped to give a pat, Or a gently say my name. I never saw a loving glance, I was always on the run. For people thought that hurting me, was really lots of fun. And then one day I heard a voice So gentle, kind and sweet, And arms so soft reached down to me, And took me off my feet. "No one again will hurt you" Was whispered in my ear. "You'll have a home to call your own, where you will know no fear. You will be dry, you will be warm, you'll have enough to eat And rest assured that when you sleep, your dreams will all be sweet." I was afraid I must admit, I've lived so long in fear. I can't remember when I let A human come so near. And as she tended to my wounds, And cleaned and brushed my fur. She told me `bout the rescue group. And what it meant to her. She said, "We are a circle, A line that never ends. And in the center there is you, protected by new friends. And all around you are the ones, Who'll keep you safe and sound. Who will share their loving home with you, Until a forever one can be found. We will do all we can, by searching near and far. To find the perfect home for you, where you can be a star." She said, "There is a family, that's waiting patiently. and pretty soon we'll find them, just you wait and see. And then they'll join our circle, they'll help to make it grow. so there'll be room for more like you, who have no place to go." I waited very patiently, The days, they came and went. Today's the day, I would hope, my family will be sent. Then just when I began to think, It wasn't meant to be. there were people standing there, just gazing down at me. I knew them in a heartbeat, I could tell they felt it too. They said "We have been searching for, A special bun like you." Now every night I say a prayer, to all the Gods that be. Thank you for the life I live, and all you've given me. But most of all protect the bunnies, in the pound and on the street. And send a Rabbit Rescue Person, to lift them off their feet. One of my most precious experiences occurred when my wayward son had visited me and left me in tears once again. This child is like trying to hug a porcupine! He believes he is doing himself and everyone else a favor when he tells things “the way they are.” That evening, I had been alone at home. Everyone in my support system was unavailable: my husband was away serving in a Church calling, my youngest son was at work, and my parents were out of town. I was completely defenseless when my son began to hurl unkind accusations and angry words. I remember the searing pain and agony I felt in the wake of his tirade. When he stomped out the door, I sank to the floor and sobbed. I felt myself spiraling into despair and loneliness. I thought that I had nowhere to run and nobody to turn to. As I wept uncontrollably, I realized that I wasn’t alone; all I needed to do was talk to my Heavenly Father and ask for comfort. What occurred then was unexpectedly beautiful and priceless. As I poured out my agony and begged not to be alone, I asked for someone to come be with me and help me through this horrible time. Soon, I began to feel a warmth creep across my body. Immediately to my right, I sensed the presence of a grandfather to whom I had been particularly close in my youth. Then, to my left, I sensed the presence of my husband’s grandmother, whom I had met only twice in our early marriage. She was sympathetic to my plight; she had lived her life without seeing any of her sons active in the Church. As these two family members stayed with me, I felt surrounded by love, peace, and the knowledge that families are connected in this life and the next. My husband and I have had many experiences with ancestors helping us, but this experience was especially sweet because it came to me in such a difficult moment. It was a vivid reminder that we are never alone. When we need help we will be ministered to by spirits who love us, know us, and want to help us succeed.

After roasting a duck over the fire and sharing a bottle of wine, they climbed in the tent for the night and went to sleep. Some hours later, Holmes awoke and nudged his faithful friend. ‘Watson, look up at the sky and tell me what you see.’ Watson replied, ‘I see millions and millions of stars.’ ‘What does that mean to you?’ Sherlock asked. Watson pondered for a minute. ‘Astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies and potentially billions of planets. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three. Theologically, I can see that God is all powerful and that we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. ‘What does it tell you, Sherlock?’ Sherlock was silent for a minute, then spoke. ‘Watson, you moron. It means that someone has stolen our tent.’

The challenge of knowledge is not acquiring it. In our digital world, you can acquire almost any knowledge at almost any time. The challenge is knowing which knowledge is worth acquiring. And then building a system to forward bits of it through time, to the future situation or problem or challenge where it is most applicable, and most needed. At that future point, when you’re applying that knowledge directly to a real-world challenge, you won’t have to worry about memorizing it, integrating it, or even fully understanding it. You will only have to apply it, and any gaps in your understanding will very quickly reveal themselves. By the time you’re done solving a real problem with it, book knowledge has become experiential knowledge. And experiential knowledge is something you carry with you forever.

Instructions to BYU religion professors state that students should “feel free to raise honest questions… [knowing that those] questions will be discussed intelligently in the context of faith. Where answers have not been clearly revealed, forthright acknowledgment of that fact should attend, and teachers should not present their own interpretations of such matters as the positions of the Church. Students should see exemplified in their instructors an open, appropriately tentative, tolerant approach to “gray” areas of the gospel. At the same time they should see in their instructors certitude and unwavering commitment to those things that have been clearly revealed and do represent the position of the Church. Teachers should be models of the fact that one can be well trained in a discipline, intellectually vigorous, honest, critical, and articulate, and at the same time be knowledgeable and fully committed to the gospel of Jesus Christ, His Church and Kingdom, and His appointed servants.”

I Was Drugged By My Parents When I was asked why we didn't have a drug problem when you and I were growing up I replied: "I had a drug problem when I was young. I was drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions. I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents, told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was asked of me. I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out with soap if I uttered profanity. I was drug to the neighbors to help out some poor soul who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or chop some firewood. Those drugs are still in my veins and they affect my behavior. They are stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin. If children today had this kind of drug problem, America would be a better place." - A Concerned Citizen

The unifying good of procreation provides a strong rationale for government recognition of marriage: Marriage stabilizes homes, and provides a natural reason for both fathers and mothers to remain committed to the domestic life into which they bring children. It cultivates a climate where permanence and fidelity are expected of married partners — something that is vital for the welfare of children born into the union. This explains barriers to divorce, ongoing obligations post-marriage (such as alimony), and most other legal norms associated with marriage. Because of the way marriage norms impact the lives of children, there is a public interest in promoting these norms.
Conversely, a revisionist marriage policy assumes that fathers and mothers are each expendable in the eyes of law. Further, by definition, two men or two women cannot be the natural, biological parents of the children they raise. Thus, for same-sex partners, non-biological parenting must be the norm, rather than the exception. By making same-sex parenting morally (and legally) equivalent to man-woman parenting, we undermine our ability to elevate any parental arrangement as a social ideal — including biological parenthood itself.
Children can be — and often are — well-raised by people who are not their biological father and mother (and often for good reasons), and this includes same-sex couples. The argument here is not related to any parents’ abilities as a caregiver, but rather that a child’s biological father and mother each contribute something valuable and ultimately irreplaceable in their role as parents. Man-woman marriage policies enshrine this arrangement as a social ideal worth pursuing. Conversely, same-sex marriage actively undermines this ideal.
It goes without saying that civil society thrives best when it is structured by an array of non-coercive social institutions, including families, marriage, churches, clubs, unions, and other non-government organizations. The more such institutions shape and inform societal norms and practices, the less the government has a pretext to. Strong families deter the need for the state to compensate with large, costly welfare programs. For this reason and more, maintaining family norms is vital to maintaining human liberty.
Many of the legally respected duties and privileges of family and marriage are a natural endowment of united procreation, and therefore precede and transcend state authority. Redefining marriage to include inherently non-conjugal unions assumes instead these marital duties and privileges are grants of the state to give to whomever the state pleases, and this will jeopardize the strength of the family unit in its contest with the state. The historically-recognized autonomy of the procreative unit may come to be seen as an invention of the state, to be modified or even rescinded at the pleasure of the state. In contrast, the conjugal understanding of marriage preserves the idea that the duties and privileges of marriage (such as autonomy in domestic affairs) philosophically precede the state.
If you raise your children, you can spoil your grandkids; But if you spoil your children, you'll have to raise your grandkids.

When a man after long years of searching chances on a thought which discloses something of the beauty of this mysterious universe, he should not therefore be personally celebrated. Amy says: June 27, 2020 at 10:50 pm Sorry, I hade to write why _I_ love Michelangelo. And it’s because he took Mary’s grief and her pain and taught us all that while father Abraham was saved from making that terrible sacrifice, she was not. There was no ram in the thicket for Mary. Who else had to sacrifice their perfect son to save the world besides God themself? The Pieta is a beautiful and a remarkable sculpture. And I think it is made more remarkable because it shows us how much we can understand and learn from each other. Mich was not a mama. He was not a woman. But this was important for him to try to understand and to struggle with and to create so that others (men, children, women, all of us) might begin to think about this… Grief. Sacrifice. Love. This is a messy, beautiful part of humanity. How could you not love an artist who attempted to do that? And then how could you not love and artist who accomplished that while capturing the majesty of not just Mary but motherhood and womanhood???

Turn your regrets into self-improvement Many of us try to push pain away. Others ruminate about perceived mistakes. But whether you ignore or fixate on what’s troubling you, research has shown that it’s impossible to run from emotions without consequences. And in a vicious twist, dodging upsetting feelings actually makes them even more present: Suppressing our emotions can diminish our capacity for joy and potentially manifest as physical pain. So instead of trying to ignore your regrets, it’s a better idea to practice acknowledging the experience. Try this: Start by slowing down and noticing your thoughts and sensations. Relax your face and hands, and think about accepting how you feel now without worrying you’ll feel this way forever. Reaching this middle ground between avoiding and dwelling will prove less depressing. Researchers also found that when people find a silver lining in their regret, they are able to think more clearly. “Regret can be a problem, but one benefit of regret is that it signals improvement is possible,” said Neal Roese, a professor of marketing at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University who focuses on the psychology of judgment and decision-making. “The trick is to avoid obsessing and pull out a lesson that can be applied in future situations.” Read more >>
a deeper criticism of relying on boycotts as activism’s go-to tool — namely, that they risk reducing to an individual consumer choice what is fundamentally a collective political problem. In Quartz, the writer Alden Wicker has called the phenomenon of conscious consumerism “a lie”: On its face, conscious consumerism is a morally righteous, bold movement. But it’s actually taking away our power as citizens. It drains our bank accounts and our political will, diverts our attention away from the true powerbrokers, and focuses our energy instead on petty corporate scandals and fights over the moral superiority of vegans.
Overall, poor and working-class Americans did not support Trump; it was white Americans on all levels of the income spectrum who secured his victory. Clinton was only competitive with Trump among white people making more than $100,000, but the fact that their shares of the vote was nearly identical drives the point home: Economic suffering alone does not explain the rise of Trump. Nor does the Calamity Thesis explain why comparably situated black Americans, who are considerably more vulnerable than their white counterparts, remained so immune to Trump’s appeal. The answer cannot be that black Americans were suffering less than the white working class or the poor, but that Trump’s solutions did not appeal to people of color because they were premised on a national vision that excluded them as full citizens.

Here, advice-givers can help. When people come to us for advice, we can resist the urge to give them a single recommendation. People rarely need to hear our conclusion. They benefit from hearing our thought process and our perspective on the relevant criteria for making the choice. The most useful advice doesn’t specify what to do; it helps people see blind spots in their thinking and clarify their priorities. At some point, you have probably noticed that you’re wiser when giving advice to others than you are in making decisions for yourself. You’re not alone. In psychology, it’s called Solomon’s paradox, and it often happens because we have more distance from other people’s problems than our own. When making our own career choices, we tend to zoom in on all the ways that the options differ. I’ve seen students make Excel spreadsheets comparing jobs on 23 dimensions, which is an easy way to get stuck in the weeds. When we’re giving advice to others, we’re more likely to zoom out to see the big picture. Instead of trying to weigh all the factors, we base our recommendations on the two or three most important factors.
