A few months ago, I realized I couldn't read a book, watch a movie, or sustain a conversation without being distracted by my phone. I was using my phone an average of 6 hours a day, and picking it up more than 100 times.
So I started a 30-day phone detox program. For an entire month, I tried to break my unhealthy phone habits. It involved getting a "phone coach," keeping a rubber band around my phone, locking it in a safe at night, KonMari-ing my apps, taking up pottery, and spending a weekend in the woods with no technology whatsoever.
It changed my life. Here's the The New York Times column I wrote about the experience.
