Neal A. Maxwell (1926-2004) was an American scholar, educator, and religious leader. Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and later as a missionary in Canada. Maxwell earned bachelor's and master's degrees in political science from the University of Utah and held various academic and administrative roles there. In 1974, he was called as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). In 1981, he was ordained an apostle. Maxwell was known for his eloquent speaking and writing style, authoring numerous books and articles on religious topics. He served as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles until his death in 2004.
