“My best advice to parents is to make time to be with your children. I mean REALLY be with them (no cell phones or other distractions). Follow their lead. Get down on their level and play with them as equals. Let them be the teachers and instructors. Kids would rather have parents who are interested in them than parents who are interesting to them “The other thing is that parents seem to always want to prep kids to be better in the future (for example, “He’s going to have to learn to be more responsible when he gets to high school”) instead of valuing where they are today. If we pay attention to giving our kids what they need in the present moment--without evaluating so much--then a bright future will emerge in its own sweet time… “I am better off not being home physically if I can’t be home emotionally. My son can handle my being away at work, but he has a real hard time with me being home, but inattentive. I believe that children would rather have 100 percent of your attention for one hour that 25 percent of your attention for the whole day.”
