Harry Chapin
Harry Chapin (1942-1981) was an American singer-songwriter, philanthropist, and hunger activist. He is best known for his folk rock and pop rock songs, achieving worldwide success in the 1970s. Chapin's most famous songs include "Taxi" and "Cat's in the Cradle," the latter of which topped the music charts. He was born on December 7, 1942, in New York City. Chapin came from a musical family and initially pursued a career in documentary filmmaking before turning to music. His debut album, "Heads & Tales," released in 1972, featured the hit single "Taxi". Over his career, he released 11 albums and sold over 16 million records worldwide. Beyond his music, Chapin was deeply committed to humanitarian causes, particularly the fight against hunger. He co-founded World Hunger Year (now WhyHunger) in 1975 and was instrumental in creating the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977. His tireless efforts earned him posthumous recognition, including the Congressional Gold Medal in 1987. Tragically, Chapin's life was cut short when he died in a car accident on July 16, 1981, at the age of 38. His legacy continues through his music and his lasting impact on humanitarian efforts.
