Dieter F. Uchtdorf is a prominent religious leader and former airline executive. He is a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), a position he has held since October 2, 2004. He was born on November 6, 1940, in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). Uchtdorf’s early life was marked by the turmoil of World War II. His family fled to West Germany, where they joined the LDS Church in 1947. Uchtdorf pursued a career in aviation, joining the German Air Force in 1959 and later becoming a fighter pilot. He then worked for Lufthansa, where he rose to the position of Senior Vice President of Flight Operations. In 1994, Uchtdorf was called as a general authority of the LDS Church, serving in various leadership roles before being appointed to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. From 2008 to 2018, he served as the Second Counselor in the First Presidency of the church. Uchtdorf and his wife, Harriet Reich, married in 1962 and have two children. Known for his inspirational messages and emphasis on hope and faith, Uchtdorf has become a beloved figure in the LDS community.
