Alma 46:12 And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.
Anders Nygren: “What, then, has the Cross of Christ to tell us about the nature and content of Agape-love? It testifies that it is a love that gives itself away, that sacrifices itself, even to the uttermost … Indeed as Paul sees it, Agape can go so far in requiring a man to sacrifice his own spiritual advantages for the advantage of his neighbour, that he even declares himself willing to be accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of his kinsmen according to the flesh, if thereby they might be saved,” (Rom. Ix. 3), (ibid. 118, 132)
Self-Sacrifice is exactly as the word says "Self Destructive" and Duty Laden (meaning you must do it no matter what you think about it or how it affects you). It means giving up a greater condition to gain a lesser condition.
The stump still had more to give. The boy got cold, but had a wood burning stove. So he ground the stump up into pellets … And the wood pellets were happy. And when winter came, the boy burned the pellets. Finally, the tree had no more to give, so its days of happiness were over. As to all things that consistently live a philosophy of self-sacrifice, The Tree no longer existed.
You hear much said by some about their sacrifices. As they use the term it is without meaning to me … Where, then, is the [self] sacrifice this people have ever made? There is no such thing—they have only exchanged a worse condition for a better one.
The Saints sacrifice everything; but, strictly speaking, there is no [self] sacrifice about it. If you give a penny for a million of gold! A handful of earth for a planet! A temporary worn out tenement for one glorified, that will exist, abide, and continue to increase throughout a never ending eternity, what a [self] sacrifice for sure!
Moses 1:39 For behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. 2 Peter 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Timothy 3:16 ...God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. Alma 26:16 Therefore, let us glory, yea, we will glory in the Lord; yea, we will rejoice, for our joy is full; yea, we will praise our God forever. Behold, who can glory too much in the Lord? Yea, who can say too much of his great power, and of his mercy, and of his long-suffering towards the children of men? 1 Peter 5:11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
You hear many talk about having made sacrifices; if I had that word [self-sacrifice] in my vocabulary I would blot it out.
Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And Jesus said unto them … every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit eternal life.
