One day, whether you are 14, 28 or 65, you will stumble upon someone who will start a fire in you that cannot die.
It is well nigh as dangerous to claim too much for the inspiration of God, in the affairs of men, as it is to claim too little. By the first, men are led into superstition, and into blasphemously accrediting their own imperfect actions, their blunders, and possibly even their sins, to God; and by the second, they are apt to altogether eliminate the influence of God from human affairs; I pause in doubt as to which conclusion would be the worse.
Put difficult questions in the back of your minds and go about your lives. Ponder and pray quietly and persistently about them. The answer may not come as a lightning bolt. It may come as a little inspiration here and a little there, ‘line upon line, precept upon precept’ (D&C 98:12). Some answers will come from reading the scriptures, some from hearing speakers. And, occasionally, when it is important, some will come by very direct and powerful inspiration.
Seekers who have paid the price in perspiration have been magnified by inspiration.
Our Heavenly Father gave us powers of reason, and we are expected to use them to the fullest. But he also gave us the Comforter, who he said would lead us into truth and by whose power we may know the truth of all things.
the doctrine of the Lord’s Church teaches us another eternal interest to guide us: the teachings of our Savior, who inspired the Constitution of the United States and the basic laws of many of our countries.
The inspiration which was promised to all flesh bvethe Lord through the prophecy of Joel, is not the promiseof the Holy Ghost, but the promise of the guidance of theLight of Christ, or the Spirit of Truth, which is given toevery man who comes into the world. It is through thisSpirit that the inspiration comes to those who are not members of the Church. This Spirit has been poured out andis the active agency by which the great discoveries in thesemodern times have been accompished. It is this Spirit whichthe Lord declares he will withdraw from the world, andwhich he said to Noah would "not always strive with man,"and not the Holy Ghost which they never had. It is thisSpirit which led Columbus in his discoveries.
I cannot tell you how the light comes. What I know is that it is more ancient than imagining. That it travels across an astounding expanse to reach us. That it loves searching out what is hidden what is lost what is forgotten or in peril or in pain. That it has a fondness for the body for finding its way toward flesh for tracing the edges of form for shining forth through the eye, the hand, the heart. I cannot tell you how the light comes, but that it does. That it will. That it works its way into the deepest dark that enfolds you, though it may seem long ages in coming or arrive in a shape you did not foresee. And so may we this day turn ourselves toward it. May we lift our faces to let it find us. May we bend our bodies to follow the arc it makes. May we open and open more and open still to the blessed light that comes.
Our life has not been an ascent up one side of a mountain and down the other. We did not reach a peak, only to decline and die. We have been as drops of water, born in the ocean and sprinkled on the earth in a gentle rain. We became a spring, and then a stream, and finally a river flowing deeper and stronger, nourishing all it touches as it nears its home once again. Don't accept the modern myths of aging. You are not declining. You are not fading away into uselessness. You are a sage, a river at its deepest and most nourishing. Sit by a river bank some time and watch attentively as the river tells you of your life.
Like light in the sun spilling out of the sun, the spirit within beams its way through all our cracks till our most treasured walls come down. The coming down of those walls is the blessing we crave and resist. The coming down of those walls- so the light of the soul like the light of the sun can help the world grow- this is the call of calls.
The world’s current chaotic situation may seem daunting as we consider the multitude of issues and challenges. But it is my fervent testimony that if we will pray and ask Heavenly Father for needed blessings and guidance, we will come to know how we can bless our families, neighbors, communities, and even the countries in which we live.
During the past few months I have had the impression come to me that the best way to help the current world situation is for all people to rely more fully upon God and to turn their hearts to Him through sincere prayer. Humbling ourselves and seeking heaven’s inspiration to endure or conquer what is before us will be our safest and surest way to move confidently forward through these troubling times.
No matter where you live, what language you speak, or the challenges you face, God hears and answers you in His own way and in His own time. Because we are His children, we can approach Him to seek help, solace, and a renewed desire to make a positive difference in the world. Praying for justice, peace, the poor, and the sick is often not enough. After we kneel in prayer, we need to get up from our knees and do what we can to help—to help both ourselves and others.10 The scriptures are full of examples of people of faith who combined prayer with action to make a difference in their own lives and in the lives of others.
Move to your own drum, create your own rhythm. Step left if you want to, even if it's not right. Follow the hidden song only you can hear, begging you to dance - each move weaving together the lines of your life, the love of your heart, and the light of your soul.
What If There Is No Need To Change What if there is no need to change? No need to transform yourself Into someone who is more compassionate, more present, more loving, or wise? How would this affect all the places in your life where you are endlessly trying to be better, or different? What if the task is simply to unfold To become who you already are in your essential nature – Gentle, compassionate, and capable of living fully and passionately present? What if the question is not, Why am I so infrequently the person I really want to be? But ‘why do I so infrequently want to be the person I really am?’ How would this change what you think you have to learn? What if becoming who and what we truly are happens not through striving and trying But by recognizing and receiving the people and places and practices That are for us the warmth of encouragement we need to unfold? How would this shape the choices you make about how to spend today? What if you know that the impulse to move in a way that creates beauty in the world Will arise from deep within And guide you every time you simply pay attention And wait. How would this shape your stillness, your movement, Your willingness to follow this impulse To just let go And dance?
Could our minds and our hearts be big enough just to hang out in that space where we’re not entirely certain about who’s right and who’s wrong? Could we have no agenda when we walk into a room with another person, not know what to say, not make that person wrong or right? Could we see, hear, feel other people as they really are? It is powerful to practice this way, because we’ll find ourselves continually rushing around to try to feel secure again—to make ourselves or them either right or wrong. But true communication can happen only in that open space.
A work of art which inspires us comes from no quibbling or uncertain man.
If you do not act on a suggestion at first, you grow dull to its message.
To be beautiful means to be yourself. You don't need to be accepted by others. You need to accept yourself.
