Aaron (who was a brother of Moses, and also a Levite) with his four sons, were elected first to hold this Lesser Priesthood and to minister in the Priest's office. But this authority was only a part of the powers of the Higher Priesthood, hence it is termed the Lesser. It was, in fact, a new arrangement, something joined on or added to the Melchizedek Priesthood, and hence it is said to be an appendage to the higher Priesthood.
