In a sense, we die as to premortality in order to be born into mortality. Likewise, we must die as pertaining to time in order to be born into eternity. The separation of the physical body and the eternal spirit is a necessary part of the plan of God, for, as Alma explained, to reclaim man from this temporal death would destroy the great plan of happiness (Alma 42:8). Truly, death passes upon all men and women to fulfill “the merciful plan of the great Creator” (2 Nephi 9:6).
