When the stories of our life no longer bind us, we discover within them something greater. We discover that within the very limitations of form, of our maleness and femaleness, of our parenthood and our childhood, of gravity on the earth and the changing of the seasons, is the freedom and harmony we have sought for so long. Our individual life is an expression of the whole mystery, and in it we can rest in the center of the movement, the center of all worlds.
Whatever makes you weep may it open your eyes to beauty Where your heart has hardened may it crack open and let the light flood in Whatever worry squirrel-cages in your mind may it animate your creativity Whatever pettiness worms through your door may it teach you to laugh gently at your very human self May all the wrong turns you’ve taken the fumbles, stumbles every epic screwup lead you to this meadow this river this beloved this work this burning bush that was waiting for you.
Willing to experience aloneness, I discover connection everywhere; Turning to face my fear, I meet the warrior who lives within; Opening to my loss, I gain the embrace of the universe; Surrendering into emptiness, I find fullness without end. Each condition I flee from pursues me, Each condition I welcome transforms me And becomes itself transformed Into its radiant jewel-like essence. I bow to the one who has made it so, Who has crafted this Master Game; To play it is purest delight - To honor its form, true devotion.
This is a beautiful and breathtaking moment that fills the sky with vibrant colors, as the sun rises above the horizon.
Practice, Why we recite, do, memorize, return to over and over again. This Breath. This moment. Over and Over Sometimes it feels mechanical. And sometimes it brings up its opposite. And you just keep working with it. In the Jewish mystical tradition, there’s a story of a great rabbi who taught his disciples to memorize, reflect, contemplate, and place the teachings of the holy words of the Torah (Jewish bible) ON their heart. One day a student asked the rabbi why he always used the phrase “on your heart.†The master replied, “Only something greater than yourself can put the teachings in your heart. Here we recite and learn and put them on the heart, hoping that someday when your heart breaks, they will fall in.†So we do this practice both to release ourself from the past, and also to allow the heart finally to break open and to renew the original goodness.
The best chance to be whole is to love whatever gets in the way until it ceases to be an obstacle.
Like light in the sun spilling out of the sun, the spirit within beams its way through all our cracks till our most treasured walls come down. The coming down of those walls is the blessing we crave and resist. The coming down of those walls- so the light of the soul like the light of the sun can help the world grow- this is the call of calls.
We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.
What do you think it is about the power of music that brings people together, builds bridges, and heals hearts? I'm really fascinated by this idea of one mind. There are very few places I can think of in the world where thousands of people go to and all put their hands in the air simultaneously, all sing along to songs that have ideals in them that they believe in, and all jump up and down together, sweat together, dance, laugh, cry. The only thing I can sort of compare it to is a sporting event when people all cheer together for one team. The only difference is that, then, half the people in the audience go home feeling sad because their team lost. There are very few places where you have this idea of one mind with people all going together. And I think it’s a great experience. You know, I see people coming to shows carrying the stress of the world on their shoulders and they dance and sing and laugh and cry. Then they walk out a little bit taller, a little bit more able to face whatever it is that’s coming next for them in their day.
The truth you believe and cling to makes you unavailable to hear anything new.
Generally speaking, we regard discomfort in any form as bad news. But for practitioners or spiritual warriors, people who have a certain hunger to know what is true, feelings like disappointment, embarrassment, irritation, resentment, anger, jealousy, and fear, instead of being bad news, are actually very clear moments that teach us where it is that we are holding back. They teach us to perk up and lean in when we feel we'd rather collapse and back away. They're like messengers that show us, with terrifying clarity, exactly where we're stuck. This very moment s the perfect teacher, and lucky for us, it's with us wherever we are. Most of us do not take these situations as teachings. We automatically hate them. We run like crazy. We are use to all kinds of escaping - all addictions stem from this moment when we meet our edge and we just can't stand it. There are so many ways that have been dreamed up to entertain us away from the moment.
There is a brokenness out of which comes the unbroken, a shatteredness out of which blooms the unshatterable. There is a sorrow beyond all grief which leads to joy and a fragilityout of whose depths emerges strength. There is a hollow space too vast for words through which we pass with each loss, out of whose darkness we are sanctioned into being. There is a cry deeper than all sound whose serrated edges cut the heart as we break open to the place inside which is unbreakable and whole, while learning to sing.
If you pour a handful of salt into a cup of water, the water becomes undrinkable. But if you pour the salt into a river, people can continue to draw the water to cook, wash, and drink. The river is immense, and it has the capacity to receive, embrace, and transform. When our hearts are small, our understanding and compassion are limited, and we suffer. We can’t accept or tolerate others and their shortcomings, and we demand that they change. But when our hearts expand, these same things don’t make us suffer anymore. We have a lot of understanding and compassion and can embrace others. We accept others as they are, and then they have a chance to transform.
When I understand my suffering, I love myself, and I know how not to keep nourishing the suffering, how to transform the suffering. I get lighter, I become more compassionate, and with that kind of freedom and compassion, I feel liberated.
We are here to awaken from our illusion of separateness.
And just like the moon, you shall go through phases of light, of dark, and of everything in between. And though you may not always appear with the same brightness, You are always, always whole.
Nobody ever talks about this part.. You know, the part where you're no longer a caterpillar not yet a butterfly. You don't know who you are and you don't know where you're going. All you know is that every fiber of your being is calling for transformation. For disruption. For a revolution of the spirit. So surrender. Breakdown. This is not the death of You. This is the dying of who you once were. This is your rebirth, darling.
Her rebirth was stunning – she lifted herself up from the depths of despair, grasped her dreams, embedded them in her heart, and walked forward into a future that only her will and vision could control.
