Shapiro then took Sanders' ugly "we go bomb houses and buses of children" smear to task. "Let’s just remind Senator Sanders that America defeated slavery and Nazism and communism – well, to be fair, he might still be a bit torn about that last one," he said. "America has spent more blood and treasure defending the freedom of others than any country in world history. The Union lost some 365,000 soldiers in the Civil War to free the slaves; 117,000 in World War I to keep Europe free of German imperialism; 405,000 Americans died in World War II to keep the world free of fascism; 37,000 died to keep the South Korean people free; 58,000 died in a vain attempt to keep the Vietnamese people free; more than 2,000 in a continuing attempt to free Afghanistan of its terror-masters; and yes, 4,500 in a continuing attempt to free Iraq."
"That doesn’t mean America hasn’t made mistakes," he continued. "But the American fighting men and women have been more humane in their pursuit of liberty for others than any other fighting force in human history, and the world has trended toward democracy and freedom because of it."
Where do you get good and evil from science I do get that from the 10 commandments I do get that from love your neighbor as yourself love the stranger that's why we get and that's why the Western world abolish slavery before anybody else it had slaves which was terrible but everyone had slaves so the only moral question is why did anybody abolish it not why did anybody have it if an evil is universal the only question to ask is why did it end not why was it there?
Break off the shackles from the poor black man, and hire him to labor like other human beings;
[T]o make myself clear. Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will. My point is for us to have stayed in that position even though the numbers were on our side means that we were mentally enslaved. [T]he reason why I brought up the 400 years point is because we can't be mentally imprisoned for another 400 years. We need free thought now. Even the statement was an example of free thought. It was just an idea. [O]nce again I am being attacked for presenting new ideas.
Invite a student to read aloud the following statement, which is a portion of the introduction to Official Declaration 2...Point out the line that states, “Church records offer no clear insights into the origins of this practice.” While some people may suggest reasons why males of African descent were not ordained to the priesthood for a time, those reasons may not be accurate. Emphasize that today, the Church disavows the theories advanced in the past on this issue: black skin is a sign of divine disfavor or curse; black skin reflects unrighteous actions in a premortal life; mixed-race marriages are a sin; or blacks or people of any other race or ethnicity are inferior in any way to anyone else. Church leaders today unequivocally condemn all racism, past and present, in any form.
The dark underside of that document, of course, was racism. Alone among modern Western democracies, the United States maintained extensive race-based slavery within its borders, and the Constitution protected that institution. Only after the cataclysm of the Civil War was the Constitution amended to establish that America’s national identity was as neutral racially and ethnically as it was religiously.
For some on the left, the document is irredeemably stained by the sins of the Founding Fathers, who preached liberty while holding people in chains.
Once you believe that any figure in history who once owned slaves is illegitimate and should be erased, it’s hard to take our founding documents very seriously. How can you accept a Bill of Rights when it was written by slave owners? You can’t. Which is why so many on the left don’t — and ignore the First and Second Amendments, among many others. That was the point we were trying to make. You may disagree but it didn’t seem crazy or mean spirited.
