So the thing that really is poignant to me, and the thing that I want to get to is the fact that the Hong Kongers — desperate to preserve their freedom, under the gun with people being kidnapped and disappearing and laws creeping in there that are meant to erode their freedoms — are waving the American flag. And they're singing our "Star-Spangled Banner." They are waving the American flag. And this is — I mean this should move all of us. This should touch every single one of us, and remind us that when people look for freedom, when they are afraid of oppression, when they strive to become the one thing that all great people have to be — which is free — and all individuals want to be, which is free. And the only thing that gives nobility to charity the only thing that gives nobility to faith in God, the only thing that gives nobility to a person is if he chooses those things freely. Right, if you choose to believe you — don't believe at the edge of a sword because that has no legitimacy.
I also believe that these acts are recorded in heaven. God, who sees the smallest act of kindness, does indeed bless those who stop to lift and help people who are helpless to help themselves.
One of the things Paul’s statement helps to explain is the list describing charity. Phrases like “suffereth long” and “is not puffed up” can be confusing for some modern readers. However, this could also be translated as “charity is patient and kind, isn’t jealous, isn’t arrogant, doesn’t insist on getting his own way, isn’t easily upset, doesn’t hatch evil plots, doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices in faithfulness.”4 Instead of “believing all things” which makes charity seem naïve, the end of the list can actually be translated as, “endures all abuse, never loses faith, is always confident, and remains patient no matter what happens.”5
Love your enemies! What, love hell? When people do that, they get where devils are. If it had been written, 'Love the spirits God has placed in tabernacles, and try to reclaim them and do them good, and pray for those who despitefully use you,' I would feed and clothe them, take peculiar care of them, and place them where they would not hurt anybody. You may think that I am disputing the Bible. If you understood what the Lord means when he talks about loving His children, you would understand that he does not love them as they are now; for he hates and is angry with the wicked. He dislikes their wicked acts, but he loves His children, because he has organized them, and he wishes to see them obedient.
Do I say love your enemies? Yes, upon certain principles. But you are not required to love their wickedness: you are only required to love them so far as concerns a desire and effort to turn them from their evil ways, that they may be saved through obedience to the gospel.
“The world in which we live would benefit greatly if men and women everywhere would exercise the pure love of Christ, which is kind, meek, and lowly. It is without envy or pride. … It seeks nothing in return. … It has no place for bigotry, hatred, or violence. … It encourages diverse people to live together in Christian love regardless of religious belief, race, nationality, financial standing, education, or culture.”
Unless we can help the world where we are, we could not help it if we were somewhere else.
Every one of us is blind and deaf until our eyes are opened to our fellowmen, until our ears hear the voice of humanity.
The nearer we get to our heavenly Father, the more are we disposed to look with compassion on perishing souls— to take them upon our shoulders and cast their sins behind our back.
I am going to talk to all this Society— if you would have God have mercy on you, have mercy on one another.
..it is natural for females to have feelings of charity...
"Fret not thyself because of evil doers" God will see to it.
Nothing is so much calculated to lead people to forsake sin as to take them by the hand and watch over them with tenderness.
...tis the doctrine of the devil to retard the human mind and retard our progress, by filling us with selfrighteousness---The nearer we get to our heavenly Father, the more are we dispos'd to look with compassion on perishing souls
...The devil flatters us that we are very righteous, while we are feeding on the faults of others---We can only live by worshipping our God--all must do it for themselves--none can do it for another
Don't ever allow yourself to be offended by someone who is learning his job.
A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of.
There is a fine line between helping and being performative, but nevertheless there is a line.
The Lord has blessed His daughters with certain distinctive, divine gifts--including, said Joseph Smith, "feelings of charity," which result in an innate ability and desire to nurture and love. The gift of charity is the culminating gift of the Spirit, for it embodies almost all others. And women are blessed with a propensity for this gift.
Charity is not an emotion or an action. It is not something we feel or do. Charity is who the Savior is. It is His most defining and dominant attribute. It is what enabled Him to endure the Garden and the cross for you and me. It is one of the things that makes Him God. Thus, when we plead for the gift of charity, we aren't asking for kind feelings toward someone who has wounded us. We are pleading for our very natures to be changed, for our character to become more and more like the Savior's, so that we literally feel as He would feel and do what He would do. This is why Mormon said that when the Savior appears, those who have been gifted with charity will be like him, for they will "see him as he is."
Unity is a natural outgrowth of charity.
True charity is love in action. The need for charity is everywhere.
Sometimes it's worse to win a fight than to lose.
No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.
It is easier to love humanity as a whole than it is to love one's neighbor.
Charity sees the need not the cause.
Every charitable act is a stepping stone toward heaven.
We should give as we would receive, cheerfully, quickly, and without hesitation; for there is no grace in a benefit that sticks to the fingers.
The best way to do good to ourselves is to do it to others.
