Although I am grateful for those young men, the idea of "the young women need to learn to do it by themselves" still haunts me. As sisters in the Relief Society, I believe we should be running to the aid of those young women, ever watchful to give a hand as well as to accept their help. We all need each other. In this world of confusion, why would we stand back and watch them struggle? There is a difference between doing it from the (creating a sense of entitlement) and walking beside them, helping them, lifting them when they fall. I'm grateful that in this case we had worthy young men to help, but if they weren't there, ready to step in, who would have stepped in instead, in our place as mothers, aunts and leaders?
