The Prophet was inspired to correct a biblical passage which dealt with man’s relationship to his fellow beings in a true Christian society. It concluded: “Therefore, let every man stand for himself, and not another; or not trusting another.” Joseph Smith taught these principles repeatedly to the Saints and his associates. “Every man lives for himself,” the Prophet declared. “No man can be exalted in the celestial kingdom unless he be independent,” Brigham Young therefore concluded. “Every mortal being must stand up in an intelligent, organized capacity, and choose or refuse the good, and thus act for himself.
