Viktor Frankl
Viktor Frankl (1905-1997) was an influential psychiatrist, psychotherapist and Holocaust survivor. He is best known for developing logotherapy, a form of existential analysis. This approach, often called the "third school" of Viennese psychotherapy after Freud and Adler, emphasizes the search for meaning as the central human motivational force. He was born on March 26, 1905, in Vienna, Austria. Frankl's early interest in psychology led him to study medicine at the University of Vienna, where he earned his M.D. in 1930. During World War II, he and his family were imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps, where he lost his parents, brother, and wife. These harrowing experiences profoundly influenced his work, leading to his seminal book, Man's Search for Meaning (1946), which explores finding purpose even in the most difficult circumstances. After the war, Frankl returned to Vienna, where he continued his work in psychiatry and taught at the University of Vienna until 1990. He also lectured at various American universities and received numerous honors for his contributions to psychology. Frankl passed away on September 2, 1997. His legacy endures through his writings and the Viktor Frankl Institute.
