Thurgood Marshall (1908-1993) was a pioneering American civil rights lawyer and the first African American justice of the United States Supreme Court. He is best known for his role in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which led to the desegregation of public schools in the United States. He was born on July 2, 1908, in Baltimore, Maryland. Marshall graduated with honors from Lincoln University in 1930 and earned his law degree from Howard University in 1933, where he was mentored by Charles Hamilton Houston. He began his legal career with the NAACP, where he argued and won several significant civil rights cases before the Supreme Court. In 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed Marshall to the Supreme Court, where he served until 1991. Throughout his tenure, he was a steadfast advocate for individual rights and equality. Marshall passed away on January 24, 1993, leaving a lasting legacy in the fight for civil rights and justice.
