Sigmund Freud
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. Freud's work revolutionized the understanding of the human mind and its complexities. He was born on May 6, 1856, in Freiberg, Moravia (now Příbor, Czech Republic). Freud studied medicine at the University of Vienna, where he graduated in 1881. He initially worked in neurology but soon developed an interest in the psychological aspects of human behavior. In 1885, he studied in Paris under Jean-Martin Charcot, which significantly influenced his thinking about the unconscious mind. In 1896, Freud coined the term "psychoanalysis" and began developing his theories on the unconscious, repression, and the significance of dreams. His major works include "The Interpretation of Dreams" (1900), "Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality" (1905), and "Civilization and Its Discontents" (1930). Freud's theories, such as the Oedipus complex, the id, ego, and superego, and the concept of defense mechanisms, have had a profound impact on psychology, psychiatry, and even popular culture. Despite facing criticism and controversy, his ideas continue to influence various fields. In 1938, Freud fled Nazi-occupied Austria and settled in London, where he continued his work until his death on September 23, 1939.
