Pope Francis, was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the first pope from the Western Hemisphere, the first from South America, and the first Jesuit to hold the position. Before his papacy, he worked as a chemical technician and later joined the Jesuit order, being ordained a priest in 1969. Francis became the Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was made a cardinal in 2001. Known for his humility and advocacy for the poor, he often traveled by public transportation and lived in a modest apartment. He was elected pope in 2013. He has focused on reforming the church, addressing climate change, and promoting interfaith dialogue.
