Malcolm X
Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, was a prominent African American leader and influential figure in the Nation of Islam. He advocated for Black empowerment, self-determination, and racial pride during the civil rights movement. Malcolm’s early life was marked by hardship; his father was killed when he was young, and his mother was institutionalized, leading him and his siblings to be placed in foster care. He dropped out of school after facing racial discrimination and later became involved in criminal activities, which led to his imprisonment. While in prison, he converted to Islam and joined the Nation of Islam, adopting the name Malcolm X to signify the loss of his African heritage. After his release, Malcolm X became a leading spokesperson for the Nation of Islam, known for his powerful oratory and advocacy for Black nationalism. In 1964, he left the Nation of Islam and converted to Sunni Islam, adopting the name el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz after his pilgrimage to Mecca. His views evolved to support racial unity and cooperation. Malcolm X was assassinated on February 21, 1965, in New York City. His autobiography, published posthumously, has had a lasting impact, inspiring generations with his life story and ideas.
