Kobe Bryant was an iconic American professional basketball player. He spent his entire 20-year career with the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA, where he won five championships (2000–2002, 2009, 2010). Known for his scoring ability, Bryant was an 18-time All-Star and the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP). He was born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bryant’s father, Joe “Jellybean” Bryant, was also a professional basketball player, and Kobe spent part of his childhood in Italy. He gained national attention in high school at Lower Merion in Pennsylvania, where he broke records and was drafted into the NBA straight out of high school by the Charlotte Hornets, who then traded him to the Lakers. Throughout his career, Bryant was known for his work ethic, competitive spirit, and clutch performances. He scored a career-high 81 points in a single game in 2006, the second-highest in NBA history. Off the court, he won an Academy Award for his animated short film “Dear Basketball” in 2018. Tragically, Bryant and his daughter Gianna were among nine people who died in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020. His legacy continues to inspire athletes and fans around the world.
