John F. Carlson
John F. Carlson (1875-1947) was a Swedish-born American Impressionist painter known for his landscape paintings. Born in Kalmar County, Sweden, Carlson immigrated to the United States with his family in 1884. He settled in Buffalo, New York. He studied at the Art Students League of New York, where he was influenced by Tonalism and Impressionism. Carlson became a prominent landscape painter and teacher. He founded the John F. Carlson School of Landscape Painting in Woodstock, New York, in 1922. He was also a director at the Art Students League's summer school in Woodstock and co-founded a summer school in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with Emile Gruppe in 1942. Carlson's work earned him numerous awards, including the Carnegie Prize and the Altman First Prize.
