James Thomas Anthony Valvano (1946-1993), affectionately known as "Jimmy V," was an American college basketball player, coach, and broadcaster. He was born on March 10, 1946, in Queens, New York. Valvano had a successful coaching career, most notably leading North Carolina State University to the 1983 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship. Valvano is perhaps best remembered for his inspirational speech at the 1993 ESPY Awards, where he announced the creation of the V Foundation for Cancer Research. Despite being terminally ill with cancer, he delivered a powerful message: "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." The V Foundation continues to fund cancer research in his honor. Valvano passed away on April 28, 1993. His legacy lives on through the foundation and his enduring words of encouragement.
