Heraclitus
Heraclitus (c. 540-480 BCE) was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher from Ephesus, Anatolia (now Selçuk, Turkey). He is best known for his doctrine that change is central to the universe, encapsulated in his famous saying, "No man ever steps in the same river twice." Heraclitus believed in the unity of opposites and that conflict is the driving force of change. Little is known about his life, and the one book he wrote has been lost. His views survive in short fragments quoted by later authors. Heraclitus viewed fire as the essential material uniting all things and wrote that the world order is an "ever-living fire kindling in measures and being extinguished in measures."
