George Q. Cannon
George Quayle Cannon (1827-1901) was a significant leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and a prominent political figure in the 19th century. He was born on January 11, 1827, in Liverpool, England. Cannon immigrated to the United States with his family in 1842. After his mother’s death during the voyage, he settled in Nauvoo, Illinois, where he worked in a printshop and became closely associated with church leaders. Cannon served as a missionary in Hawaii, where he was instrumental in translating the Book of Mormon into Hawaiian. He later became a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1860 and served in the First Presidency under four church presidents: Brigham Young, John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, and Lorenzo Snow. In addition to his religious duties, Cannon was a five-time delegate to the U.S. Congress from the Utah Territory, where he advocated for the rights of Latter-day Saints. He was also a successful businessman, editor, and publisher, founding the Juvenile Instructor magazine and Deseret Book Company. Cannon practiced plural marriage and had five wives and 43 children. He passed away on April 12, 1901, in Monterey, California.
