Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948) was an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who became the leader of the Indian Independence Movement against British rule. He is often referred to as "Father of the Nation". Gandhi is renowned for his philosophy of nonviolent resistance (Satyagraha), which he used effectively to lead nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding women's rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and achieving self-rule (Swaraj).
