Epictetus
Epictetus (c. 50-135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher born into slavery at Hierapolis, Phrygia (modern-day Pamukkale, Turkey). After gaining his freedom, he moved to Rome and studied under the Stoic philosopher Musonius Rufus. Following his banishment from Rome by Emperor Domitian around 93 AD, Epictetus settled in Nicopolis, Greece, where he founded his own school of philosophy. Epictetus's teachings emphasized the importance of personal freedom, self-discipline, and the distinction between what is within our control and what is not. His most famous works, the "Discourses" and the "Enchiridion", were recorded by his student Arrian. Epictetus's philosophy has had a lasting impact on Stoic thought and continues to be studied and admired today.
