Baron de Montesquieu
Baron de Montesquieu, was a prominent French lawyer, man of letters, and political philosopher during the Enlightenment. He was born Charles-Louis de Secondat on January 18, 1689, in Château La Brède, near Bordeaux, France. He is best known for his work "The Spirit of the Laws" (1748), which outlined his theory of the separation of powers, a concept that has greatly influenced modern democratic governments. Montesquieu argued that political authority should be divided into legislative, executive, and judicial branches to prevent any one group from gaining too much power. He passed away on February 10, 1755, in Paris, France.
