Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) was a Scottish-born inventor, scientist, and teacher of the deaf. He is best known for inventing the telephone in 1876. Bell was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was deeply influenced by his family's work with speech and hearing, as both his mother and wife were deaf. He founded the Bell Telephone Company in 1877 and made numerous other contributions, including refining the phonograph and working on optical telecommunications and aeronautics.
