Albert Einstein
Albert Einstein (1879-1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the theories of relativity which fundamentally changed our understanding of space, time, and energy. Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany to secular Jewish parents. In 1933, while Einstein was visiting the United States, Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany. Horrified by the Nazi persecution of his fellow Jews, Einstein decided to remain in the United States where he worked at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. On the eve of World War II, he endorsed a letter to President Franklin D. Roosevelt alerting him to the potential German nuclear weapons program and recommended that the US begin similar research. Einstein is best known for his equation E=mc2, which describes the relationship between energy and mass. He received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1921 for his explanation of the photoelectric effect. His work laid the foundation for modern physics and had a profound impact on science and philosophy.
